Roanoke Valley Salary Survey
Introduction
The Roanoke County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Local 3194 has
prepared an annual salary comparison. Within this comparison you will also find
a comparison of the 2005-2006 salaries with the 2006-2007 salaries.
This salary comparison has been completed in an effort to show how the salary
structure of the County of Roanoke compares to similar localities in the state.
With that in mind we will show that the County of Roanoke continues too lag
behind most if not all of its closest competitors.
Salary compression is a large concern for many localities; we believe that our
study shows the affects of salary compression. The minimum salary grows faster
than the maximum salary causing the compression of all employees in the grade.

Conclusion
As we complete our evaluation of salaries for the past two fiscal
years, we realize that we must look forward to correct the effects
of compression in the salary structure of the County of Roanoke.
The demands on the Fire and Rescue Department continue to grow
becoming multifaceted in nature. The Firefighters and Paramedics
of Roanoke County have always met these new challenges with a high
level of professionalism and dedication.
The Roanoke County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Local
3194 suggest that the pay classifications for all uniformed personnel
be expanded to include additional pay grades for new classifications
(e.g. Driver operator, HTR specialist, FTO, Senior Fire fighter, etc.)
We know that it will take time to change the salary structure and add
new classifications, however we believe that the effects of compression
will continue to worsen the longer it is not dealt with. The recommendation
of the Roanoke County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics is that
we immediately adjust the salaries to be more competitive with our
neighboring localities. Once again, members of Local 3194 are willing to put
in the hours of work to help the Fire and Rescue Administration develop a
competitive salary schedule.
